Protestbrev til Italiens udenrigsminister Gianfranco Fini

Frit Irak-komiteerne har sammen med adskillige italienske og internationale anbefalere organiseret en international konference med titlen ”Lad Irak få fred – støt det irakiske folks legitime modstand”, som er planlagt til at finde sted den 1.-2. oktober i Italien.

Blandt dem, der har accepteret vores invitation, er fremtrædende repræsentanter for det irakiske civilsamfund såsom: Sheik Jawad Al-Khalisi, leder af Iraks Nationale Stiftelseskongres, ayatollah Ahmed Al-Baghdadi, Salah Al-Mukhtar, Irak tidligere ambassadør i Indien og Vietnam, sheik Hassan Al-Zargani, international talsmand for Muqtada Al-Sadr-bevægelsen, Mohammed Faris, irakisk patriotisk kommunist og Ibrahim Al-Kubaysi, bror til Abd Al-Jabbar Al-Kubaysi (formand for Iraks Patriotiske Alliance og siden september 2004 fængslet af besættelsesmagten).

Vi er i august blevet opmærksomme på, at 44 medlemmer af USA’s kongres har rettet en formel anmodning til den italienske regering om at forhindre ovennævnte konference.

Den italienske ambassade i Bagdad har pludselig ændret sin holdning og meddelt, at visa til Italien ikke længere gives på grund af en politisk beslutning taget af det italienske udenrigsministerium.

Det åbenbare amerikanske pres på Italiens regering, som har ført til afvisningen af visa, kan betyde, at konferencen bliver umulig at afholde, hvilket vil ødelægge muligheden for at bidrage til en retfærdig fred i Irak med respekt for det irakiske folks selvbestemmelsesret.

Over for den alvorlige indblanding i Italiens og Europas indre anliggender, der tramper på de grundlovssikrede rettigheder, kræver vi underskrivende af Italiens udenrigsministerium og regering, at de giver de ønskede visa.
